A hidden truth. Mortal enemies. Doomed love.
Marked as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet among her kind, she nearly pays with her life. Until a beautiful stranger saves her. A stranger who was sent to hunt those like her. For Jacinda is a draki—a descendant of dragons whose greatest defense is her secret ability to shift into human form. Forced to flee into the mortal world with her family, Jacinda struggles to adapt to her new surroundings. The only bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is irresistibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will's dark secret: He and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner draki is slowly slipping away—if it dies she will be left as a human forever. She'll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy.

I admit the cover is what first caught  my attention, but what really drew me in was the "descendant of dragons" part in the synopsis. I've never read about anything remotely similar so I had to read it. The book starts off well, there is action right away and we are introduced to Jacinda's world. She lives in a community of draki (known as a Pride) with her mother and sister, her dad was brought down by hunters years earlier. She has a special talent that hasn't been seen or heard of in generations and for that reason she has been treated as "property" that the Pride plans to use for it's own benefit, she's been paired with the alpha's son Cassian.

When the family leaves in the middle of the night Jacinda is miserable. She doesn't want to live among humans where she won't be able to reveal her Draki side. She is even more miserable when they end up in a hot and dry climate where she feels herself withering away. Then Will comes along. Him being around helps Jacinda's draki in a way she doesn't understand, she just knows that he is helping to keep her draki from disappearing. In fact it helps so much that her draki threatens to reveal itself around him. Even though Jacinda doesn't want to reveal her true nature to him I felt that he was trustworthy, his family not so much.

Jacinda's sister Tamra never manifested, so she has always been the outcast. Now that they live among humans she is thriving. I felt bad for Tamra's character, it seemed like she always got the short end of the stick. She had been in love with Cassian and might still be. She has managed to make a life for herself at their new school but if Jacinda doesn't keep a check on her draki the family will have to move. When Jacinda makes an enemy of the school's queen bee Tamra is also affected simply for being her sister. She just wants to belong and I think she deserves it. The ending was interesting, there was action but I didn't really feel it. It was too quick. When more is revealed about Will I wasn't surprised at all, in fact I had been expecting it. There were clues leading up to it that were difficult to miss.

I give this book 3.5 Stars!

When characters are in their "draki" form their skin changes color (depending on their talent), what color would you want to be?
